Duplex Lift Stations
Once the pump(s) kick on, they move the fluid through internal plumbing (this pipe is sometimes schedule 80 PVC, stainless steel, or ductile iron) and through the valve vault which houses a series of connections/valves that are meant to control the fluid, measure pressure, and release any air that may accumulate within the plumbing. There is often a bypass connection in this structure to allow for the use of an auxiliary pump. Commonly, there's a drain that will connect between the two structures with a slope staggered toward the wet well in case any leakage or malfunction were to occur within the vault—the water will then divert back to the wet well to re-cycle. After the valve vault stage, the flow will discharge through plumbing into a force main that will direct it to a wastewater treatment plant.
A typical duplex lift station is comprised of a precast wet well and a precast valve vault. The wet well will store an influx of wastewater until the liquid level reaches a certain point. The four float switches (that are hung from a float bracket at specific heights) will then trigger either one, or both, pumps to turn on and begin pumping the liquid level down. The consistency of the incoming flow will determine if both pumps are needed to keep up so that the station does not overflow.
